Sisters of the Sea was founded in July of 1997 when 8 women came together for a memorable surf session at Dolphin Plaza in Jacksonville, FL. We longed to have more women in the water and more all sister surf sessions... the seed was planted and an idea was born. 20 + years later, we have a few hundred members and a solid presence in the water.
In September of 1998, inspired by Rell Sunn and saddened by her passing from breast cancer, we started the Sisters of the Sea Surf Classic. The SOS Surf Classic is one of the largest and certainly longest running ALL female surf contests in the nation. We wanted to use the contest as a way to get more women in the water and to raise money to help women in our community with breast cancer. 21 years later, a few thousand gals of all ages and abilities have surfed in our Surf Classic, making it possible for us to raise over of $105,000 to date.
