The American West gets a long-overdue remix in this traveling exhibition that ditches the Hollywood version in favor of a broader, more complex reality. Featuring work from diverse artists spanning the 19th and early 20th centuries, Knowing the West highlights the Indigenous, immigrant, and marginalized communities that shaped the region. Organized by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and co-curated by Mindy N. Besaw and Jami C. Powell, the exhibit pushes back against the oversimplified cowboy narrative. The collection includes everything from oil paintings to beadwork, adding depth to a history that’s often flattened.
