1964: When the Beatles Rocked Florida at The Ritz Theatre & Museum

  • 829 North Davis Street 829 North Davis Street Jacksonville, FL, 32202 United States (map)

Florida Humanities brings the Beatles experience back to Jacksonville to commemorate the 60th anniversary of their 1964 Gator Bowl concert! The evening will feature a live performance from Beatles tribute band, Liverpool Live, and conversations with Good Day Sunshine State author and historian Bob Kealing and author and oral historian Dr. Kitty Oliver, one of the few Black attendees at the first integrated concert in the Southeast just two months after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

During the mid-60s, Beatlemania swept the nation as Americans faced great change during the Civil Rights Movement. The Beatles’ insistence on performing only for racially integrated audiences was viewed as a notable show of support in the fight against segregation, highlighting their role as allies in the movement. Join us as we relive the timeless songs from the British pop band and enjoy incredible storytelling, as we dig deep into the social climate of Florida in the ‘60s and explore the historic impact of the 1964 concert.
