While most people are familiar with Juneteenth, the Emancipation Day in Florida is actually on May 20th. On May 20th, 1865 (11 days after the Civil War ended) Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, ending slavery in the state. To celebrate the day (on the 21st), James Weldon Johnson Park is bringing headliner Paris Winningham (from NBC’s The Voice), with acts throughout the evening including JAMS, Love Reigns, Mal Jones and MJ Baker. African American food trucks and vendors will be in abundance, as well as a ton of activities for kids. The perfect blend of education and festivities!
